Trip Overview

Grade 4+/5: One of the greatest Himalayan rafting expeditions

This suggested organised rafting trip in Nepal can readily be extended to include sightseeing and other activities too. What can we say? The Sun Koshi (The River of Gold) is regarded as one of the top ten whitewater rafting rivers in the world. To the informed, this river needs no introduction. It flows through the untouched countryside and small villages of the beautiful Mahabharat Lekh mountains of the central Nepal Himalaya. The start point lies three hours east of Kathmandu at Dolalghat, and the end point is at Chatra, near Dharan in the Eastern Terai. The Sun Koshi’s volume increases considerably as it combines with seven big tributaries to become one of the major rivers of South Asia. The first few days offer fun class II-III rapids and allow time to learn the skills and teamwork needed for the much larger, far more challenging rapids to come as the whitewater builds into great, thundering class III-IV+ and sometimes class V rapids if water levels are high. The Sun Koshi presents the chance to see a very special part of Nepal that is rarely seen by outsiders and, with it, billions of litres worth of heart-pumping, world-class whitewater action. In addition to out-standing whitewater rafting, the Sun Koshi offers varied and changing landscapes from terraced farmland to steep gorges and then to sub-tropical jungles. Each night you'll camp on large, sandy river banks in close contact with village people and perhaps rewarding sights of wildlife. The final part of the river may well be the most dramatic – 10kms of nearly non-stop class IV rapids through the ‘Jungle Corridor, and climaxing with the ‘Big Dipper’ rapid.
Sleeping bags (3-season) will be required for the nights spent camping. We can arrange sleeping bag rentals if required.

    DAY
    3 - 8

    Sun Kosi River Expedition

The typical pattern for these days is usually an early morning wake-up call with 'bed tea' served in your tent, followed by an 'al fresco' breakfast. Once camp is broken, it's onto the waters for whitewater fun and paddling for 3–4 hours and to a suitable scenic place for a picnic lunch. In the afternoon, there are more Sun Koshi capers for between 2 and 4 hours before the next wild camp location and dinner.

    Accommodation: Wild Camps, Sun Koshi 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
