Trip Overview

Walking beneath Himalayan giants on one of our rather easy walking holidays in Nepal and for anyone who wants to enjoy tea house trekking

We've intentionally designed this trek to feature mostly relatively short walking days so that the beauty of the Modi Khola Valley, as well as views of the Annapurna's and the iconic Macchapuchare (Fishtail), can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Also to afford opportunities to meet the locals and experience villages along the way, rather than hurry through them. Trekking is never entirely easy, as in the Himalaya you cannot escape ascent and descent. But it's about as easy as a trek in the Nepal Himalaya can be, and we have interrupted the usual, longish trekking day from Pothana down and then up to Ghandruk with an overnight halt at Landruk in order that those not used to hiking are not overstretched. A fitter, more experienced mountain walker could readily complete this trek at least one day sooner. From one side of the Modi Khola Valley, there are views across to Annapurna and Hiunchuli, and crossing to the opposite side, the twin summits of Fishtail reveal themselves in all their magnificence. An ideal first trek in Nepal for beginners.

Sleeping bags (4-season) will be required for nights spent in trekking lodges. We can arrange sleeping bag rentals if required.

    2

Fly to Pokhara & trek to Pothana

A private transfer to the airport for the 25-minute flight to Nepal's premier resort, Pokhara. A private vehicle transfer then takes you to the start of the trail at Phedi. Here you'll meet your porters, and once sorted, your trek begins with a steady ascent on a stone-stepped trail through beautiful forests until you emerge onto an open ridge line and encounter tiny hill villages. The trail continues with minor ups and downs through Dhampus to reach your overnight halt in the village of Pothana (1530m). Walking time is approximately 3–4 hours with around 800 m of ascent. Of course, you can always add an extra night in Pokhara and have a bit of lakeside "chill-out time" before you head off on your trek.

    Trek to Landruk

A steady climb along a well-made village trail leads up to the Deorali Pass (2100 m), from where you'll no doubt halt to take in the exhilarating views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the Modi Khola Valley below. The trail now contours the mountainside before descending through forests to the charming village of Landruk (1625 m), from where you can now relax and enjoy views of the Himalayan peaks across the valley. Walking time is approximately 3–4 hours, with around 600 m of ascent and 700 m of descent.

    Accommodation: Trekking Lodge, Landruk

    Trek to Ghandruk

A case of down then up today. First, you'll walk all the way down the valley flanks to reach the Modi Khola river, crossing via a bridge. It's then up, up, up, and at times a steep climb on a stepped trail all the way up. It can often be a hot climb, but there's no great rush, so you can take rest breaks on your way up as well as take advantage of refreshment opportunities along the way. Now, higher up and on the opposite side of the valley from where you started, there are fine views of Macchapuchare (Fishtail Peak). Walking time: approx. 4 hours with around 300 m of descent and 700 m of ascent.

Trek to Nayapul & transfer to Pokhara

Leaving Ghandruk, the trail contours the hillside and crosses a river by means of a suspension bridge to then pass through the settlement of Chane. From here there's some ascent to follow a trail along a wooded ridge line for a couple of hours before the final descent to Birethanti (1050m). It's then around 45 minutes of fairly level walking to the roadhead and a private transfer of around 90 mins back to Pokhara. Walking time approx. 4-5hours, with around 600m ascent and 950m descent.

IMPORTANT NOTE - The trekking route from Ghandruk to the main road at Nayapul is now entirely on a recently constructed jeep road. Whilst this road (of sorts) does not experience much in the way of vehicular activity it is possible that whilst the scenery remains the same, some people may not wish to/enjoy walking on the jeep road. Consequently if you prefer you can be driven directly from Ghandruk to Pokhara by private 4WD vehicle.
