Trip Overview

The Langtang Valley is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Nepal.

This short Nepal trek heads up through the Langtang Valley and through the Langtang National Park, which is renowned for being one of the few places where the increasingly rare Red Panda can be found, although seldom seen due to its rarity and that its preferred habitat is dense pine forest. Heading up the valley, this linear trek becomes increasingly spectacular as the high mountain peaks reveal themselves in all their splendour. Reaching the valley head at the atmospheric Kyanjin Gompa, there’s the option of ascending one of two classic Himalayan viewpoints: Kyanjin Ri (4773m) or even Tsergo Ri (4800m) before descending back through the valley system. Don't forget that our trekking holidays are tailor-made, and although the rate of altitude gains is reasonable, you may wish to consider adding acclimatisation days, rest days, and even contingency days. The itinerary is merely a suggested itinerary and is not entirely 'set in stone'. Sleeping bags (4-season) will be required for nights spent in trekking lodges. We can arrange sleeping bag rentals if required.

This trek can also be readily combined and lengthened with an approach to Langtang via Helambu, Gosainkund Lakes, and over the Lauribina La. See our Helambu & Langtang Trek for more.

    Trek to Langtang/Mundu

The ascent continues, and every now and again you’ll have glimpses of Langtang Lirung peak. Emerging from the forests around the 3000m mark at Ghora Tabela, the landscape is becoming much more alpine. You’ll continue ascending gradually, and you may see yaks grazing along the way. Further ahead, a large expanse of boulder field is a reminder of the tragedy that the 2015 earthquake destroyed and erased what once was the village of Langtang in its entirety. However, lodges in Langtang (3430m) are being reconstructed, so your trekking day may halt here or just an hour further along at Mundu (3550m). Walking time is approximately 5–6 hours.

    Trek to Kyanjin Gompa

The valley opens out as you make your way further up, and the walking today is primarily gradual uphill. After around 3 hours of walking, Kyanjin Gompa comes into view. A fantastic sight with the ice fall that flows off Langtang Lirung behind it. Now with high peaks in front, to your left, and to your right, the final walk of about an hour to Kyanjin Gompa (3870m) is atmospheric, and there's a great feeling that you are in the wilder reaches of the Himalaya (you are!). Walking time is approximately 4-5 hours.
