How many days are enough in Nepal

Snowcat
6th September, 2024

There are various factors to take into consideration when determining how many days are enough in Nepal.

Nepal is such a varied country.

There are historic cities like Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, then there's the lowland jungles of the Terai where you'll find famous national parks like Chitwan and Bardia.

Then of course there are the gigantic mountains of the Himalayas to explore as well as countless small villages scattered around the country.

Add to that the reality that getting around Nepal is a logistical challenge. It's a near vertical country after all.

The time needed to travel around Nepal should never be under estimated.

For those wanting to get close up to the mountains themselves then you have to take altitude into consideration and the time needed for essential acclimatisation.

For most visitors getting to Nepal involves long haul flights and they're not cheap flights either.

So, there's little point spending all that money and time if you're thinking of coming to Nepal for just a couple of days.

What do you realistically think you're going to be able to see in Nepal in just 2 or 3 days?

If you're thinking of doing a long Himalayan trek or even just a short Nepal trek you need to take into account the time it takes to get to the start of the trek and then get back to Kathmandu afterwards and in the Himalayas you can't make a trek shorter than it actually takes.

If you want to enjoy a cuppa in the Everest region you need at least a week minimum

So the only answer to the question of how many days are long enough in Nepal is "it depends".

Our usual advice is "as much time as you can make available".

If you've only got a few days, then this four day itinerary within the Kathmandu Valley is a "surface scratcher" in so much as you'll get views of the Himalayas and see a bit of heritage and rurality.

Of course if you're employed then the chances are your employer determines how much time you're allowed for a holiday.

If you've got kids then your vacation time is dependent upon school holidays.

And for most people that's a two week holiday at the most, so many longer treks are just not feasible. You'll need more than two weeks in Nepal to undertake the popular Everest Base Camp Trek.

If you're coming to Nepal solely to trek then the Annapurna Base Camp trek will just about squeeze into a two week Nepal trekking vacation.

At Annapurna Base Camp - a less than two week trek.....just!

But, there are many things you can do in Nepal as part of a two week (or less) Nepal vacation.

Nepal is great for a family holiday, both for grownups and especially kids. Fun, stimulating, and of great educational value too. Making new friends in Nepal is easy, particularly when you're a child, and the Nepalese kids, who learn English from an early age, are very friendly, welcoming, and curious.

Here's a selection of varied suggestions that you can do in Nepal as a family in two weeks or less.

If it's action and adventure you're looking for.....well, within a two week Nepal adventure holiday there's lots of things you can do.

A little bit of hiking for sure, but there's whitewater rafting, mountain biking, cultural sightseeing, paragliding, micro-light flights, bungee jumping, zip wires, hot air balloon rides, wildlife and more to enjoy in Nepal.

Here's some great ideas as to how you can enjoy a multi-activity adventure in Nepal as part of a two week Nepal vacation.

But, don't worry if action, adventure or even trekking aren't your thing.

Nepal is steeped in history and culture and is proud of its rich heritage. If you're more of a "culture vulture" a country as varied as Nepal is a delight.

There's so much you can see and do within a two week Nepal cultural tour.

You can explore ancient cities, monuments as part of a contrasting journey through Nepal and also visit rural hill villages in the Himalayan Foothills. Relax by the lake at Pokhara and enjoy wonderful views of the Himalayas and then go on Tiger safari in the jungles of Chitwan too.

You can even do a Nepal Luxury Holiday in two weeks.
