Who wouldn't get excited at the prospect and possibility of seeing both Everest and Tigers in the space of a fortnight's holiday?
This two-week Nepal family holiday is designed for families with teenagers who are of good fitness and have some previous mountain walking experience. First, an Everest trek suitable for teenagers You'll follow the classic Everest Base Camp trail as far as the aptly named Everest View Hotel, where there are, of course, breathtaking views of Everest as well as Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse. Yes, just as in the photo above, taken from the Everest View Hotel. Returning to Kathmandu, things change completely as you travel from high in the Himalaya to almost sea level and the somewhat flatter lands of the jungles of the world-famous Chitwan National Park. To enhance your chances of seeing the very elusive tiger, two days are spent on a wildlife jungle safari in Chitwan. There is of course, much more to the wildlife of Chitwan than the tiger. A dazzling array of colourful birds, crocodiles, the one-horned rhino, gharials, leopards, and pythons all call Chitwan home too. Himalaya and jungle are a contrasting combination as well as an insight into the varied nature of Nepal. Sleeping bags (4 seasons) are required for the nights spent in lodges on trek. We can arrange sleeping bag rental for you.
IMPORTANT NOTE: During certain months flights to/from Lukla are changed from Kathmandu to Manthali, which is several hours from Kathmandu! You may wish to consider allowing an extra day for this eventuality. See our FLIGHTS TO LUKLA INFORMATION for more.

Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you'll be met and receive a private transfer for the short distance into central Kathmandu and to the "KGH" Hotel in the heart of the Thamel district. You'll be given a briefing on your forthcoming adventure, and in the evening, you can take dinner at your leisure in one of the many choices of cafes and restaurants in Kathmandu, although the open-air courtyard cafe of the KGH Hotel is as good as anywhere.

A private transfer to the airport for the 40-minute spectacular flight to the airstrip at Lukla. Here you'll meet your porter team, and then your first day of trekking is actually downhill and relatively short as you descend a trail to the bottom of the river valley below. It's around 2–3 hours of walking to the village of Phakding (2610 m), and your overnight stop is staying in a typical trekking lodge.
Accommodation: Trekking Lodge, Phakding
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Today's walk begins in a straightforward manner as you follow the trail alongside the river and through pine forests to Jorsale. You'll cross the river a couple of times by suspension and plank bridge, and in around 2 hours, you'll hopefully get your first glimpse of Everest's summit poking over the Nuptse ridge in the far distance. It's then a stiff climb of 2–3 hours as the Everest Base Camp trail winds it's way up and up to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. Walking time is approx. 5–6 hours to an altitude of 3400m. Altitude gain: 800m.

So, you've come to see Everest, and while you've had tantalising glimpses, today you shall hopefully see Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and more in all their glory. Leaving Namche, it's a steep climb out of the village that, at this height, feels a lot harder than it should. So, take it easy and pace yourself, as it's around a 2.5-hour walk up to the Everest View Hotel at 3880m. It's not called the Everest View Hotel for nothing, as from this incredible vantage point there are simply jaw-dropping views up the valley, and of course there is the summit of Everest, magnificence itself as it pokes high above the Nupste ridge line. Here in this truly outstanding location, you take lunch on the terrace of the Everest View Hotel, and as it's only a couple of hours walk back, you can soak up the panoramic views without having to rush back 'home'. For the full trek to Everest Base Camp itself, we'd usually classify today's walk as an acclimatisation day using the 'climb high, sleep low' principle. But no one said that such acclimatisation days were easy, particularly at this reasonably high altitude. Adding an extra day for acclimatisation in Namche Forst is always an option. Walking time: approx. 5 hours with around 450 m of ascent and descent.

Good news! Today is mostly downhill and back to Phakding the way you came up. Strong mountain walkers can usually walk from Namche all the way back down and then up to Lukla. It makes for quite a challenging day, though, and after the walk back to Phakding, your family may not relish a further 2-hour steep climb back to Lukla. Walking time is approximately 4-5 hours.

OK, you've got to do it, and you know it. It's around a 2-hour ascent back up to Lukla itself, so even without hurrying, you'll be in Lukla for lunch, and it's time to put your feet up in the afternoon.

A private vehicle transfer will take you overland to Kathmandu and back to the KGH Hotel. Arriving late afternoon, you're once again spoiled for choices to eat out in the Thamel district this evening, and as the shops stay open late, there's still time for some last-minute souvenir hunting. Perhaps by now you're feeling confident enough to try out some polite haggling. It is, of course, bad manners to haggle over something you've no intention of purchasing.
