The high, arid region of Mustang lies behind the Himalayas on the Tibetan Plateau and the journey to the fabled walled "city" of Lo Manthang has captured the imagination of intrepid travellers for centuries. This former Kingdom was strictly off limits until the late 20th century and even now remains a restricted area, for which a special permit and other conditions must be satisfied to gain entry.
This has ensured the few who dared to trek through Mustang to Lo Manthang experienced a traditional, Tibetan influenced way of life and the wild, often inhospitable landscapes remained unspoiled and are still very much the realm of the snow leopard and Tibetan wolf.
Whilst trekking in Mustang continues to be an authentic experience for the few hardy trekkers who come here, there is now a "rough and ready" jeep road, which means those who dreamed of visiting Mustang but were precluded due to relentless high altitude and challenging walking being the default option, Mustang can nowadays be experienced on a spectacular jeep tour from Pokhara to Lo Manthang. This must surely rank as one of the world's greatest road trip adventures.
