Panoramic views from the Bhutan Snowman Trek by Steve Razzetti
Panoramic views from the Bhutan Snowman Trek by Steve Razzetti

The Bhutan Snowman Trek is considered to be the worlds hardest trek by many. The Snowman Trek is certainly regarded as one of the toughest treks by Lonely Planet. Bhutan isn't short of tough treks, but we'd not disagree with Lonely Planet.

The challenges of the Snowman Trek extend well beyond the physical. As well as duration there are several very high passes that need to be crossed.

In the winter months it's likely that some, or all of these passes will become blocked.

To the people of Bhutan, their country is known as Druk Yul....Land of the Thunder Dragon.

The Thunder Dragon being the noise made by frequent Himalayan storms that can and do occur throughout the year.

If you're unlucky enough to encounter such storms on the Snowman Trek, it can make all the difference as to whether you push on or turn around.

Chomolhari Bhutan
Chomolhari Bhutan

A relatively short, but challenging Chomolhari trek from Paro to see Chomolhari and Jitchu Drake. Returning via the Bonte La to form a mini-Himalayan circuit. Wild, mountain scenery, atmospheric camps with the odd yak herder or two for company along the way. The challenging Snowman trek passes Chomolhari too.
