Trip Overview

A delightful short trek beneath Annapurna and Fishtail, then up to the classic Himalayan viewpoint of Poon Hill.

This beautiful, moderate Himalayan trek takes in the delightful Modi Khola Valley, with walks along both sides of the valley to enjoy contrasting views of Annapurna, Hiunchuli, and Macchapuchare before heading up to the classic Himalayan viewpoint of Poon Hill for a sunrise 360-degree panorama. As the rising sun kisses the peaks, views extend across the Kali Gandaki Valley to Dhaulagiri. Passing through cheerful, colourful villages and greeting the locals along the way is all part of the pleasure of this varied Himalayan trek. The walking culminates with a seemingly never-ending two-day descent before heading to lakeside Pokhara. An ideal walk to a Himalayan view point along well-trodden village-to-village trekking trails for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness who enjoys regular hill-walking. For a shorter version of a trek to Poon Hill, please check out our Poon Hill Trek or you could create a longer trek by combining our Khopra Danda and Poon Hill Trek.

Sleeping bags (4-season) will be required for nights spent in trekking lodges. We can arrange sleeping bag rentals if required.

    Trek to Landruk

Continuing upwards, the trail rises through forests of rhododendron, and you'll have tantalising glimpses at clearings of the snowy white summits of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. You continue upwards to the Deorali Pass, high above the Modi Khola River valley below. The trail now begins to descend steeply, initially, and back into forests, passing small villages with carefully maintained terraced fields along the way. Reaching your overnight halt at Landruk village (1600 m), there are great views across the valley to the peaks of the Annapurna's. Walking time: approx. 5 hours with around 800 m of ascent and 700 m of descent.

    Accommodation: Trekking Lodge, Landruk
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

    Trek to Chhomrong

A case of down then up today. First, you'll walk all the way down the valley flanks to reach the Modi Khola river, crossing via a bridge. It's then up, up, up, and at times a steep climb on a stepped trail all the way up to a crest before the trail eases off as it contours its way to Chhomrong (2210m). This is quite a tough day as the bulk is uphill, and at certain times it can be hot and heavy going. Thankfully, there are many refreshment opportunities along the way. Now, high up on the opposite side of the valley from where you started, there are fine views of Macchapuchare (Fishtail Peak). Walking time: approx. 6-7 hours with around 300 m of descent and 900 m of ascent.

    Accommodation: Trekking Lodge, Chhomrong

Trek to Ghorepani, the "horse watering place"

After a brief descent, it's a continuous, steady climb up through rhododendron forest to another Deorali (this one has a very Tibetan feel with colourful market stalls) and up to a ridge from where you descend to Ghorepani (2900m). Walking time is around 6-7 hours, with around 150 m of descent and 750 m of ascent. Ghorepani is quite a bustling sort of place, as it has always been a stopping place between the Kali Gandaki Valley (from which it is a long steep climb up to Ghorepani) and Pokhara; hence, Ghorepani means 'horse watering place'.

    Accommodation: Trekking Lodge, Ghorepani

Poon Hill Panorama & trek to Ulleri

A pre-dawn wake-up so that you can ascend to the top of nearby Poon Hill (3210m) in order to witness the sunrise at this classic Himalayan view point. Across the Kali Gandaki, the stupendous peak of Dhaulagiri begins to glow surreal colours as the first light of the sun hits it, while closer and above you is Annapurna South. This now-very-popular view point ensures that some enterprising locals will have a hot brew for sale. Back down to Ghorepani for breakfast, and then it's time to begin descending down what will seem like a never-ending stone stepped (over 3,00 steps!) trail. Walking time is approx. 4-5 hours (plus around 2 hours from Poon Hill), with a 300-metre ascent and a 1500-metre descent.
