Trip Overview

A chilled Himalayan adventure holiday to enjoy the delights of Nepal without coming back home and feeling like you still need a holiday!

There's certainly an 'off the beaten track' feel too. Begin with a couple of days cycling back roads in the tranquil Kathmandu Valley. From Kathmandu you'll head to mediaeval Bhaktapur then explore temples and stupas at Panauti and Namobuddha. Enjoy a Himalayan sunrise at Dhulikel. Into the foothills of the Himalayas next, experience a rural nirvana and an unspoilt way of life at dreamy Nuwakot. Next is the Trisuli River for a bit of water fun in a raft to reach an atmospheric permanent riverside tented camp before heading high above the river for panoramic Himalayan views at Bandipur and then on foot exploration to villages few tourists visit. Next is a visit to Nepal's 'peaceful' lake, Begnas where you stay in a hotel by the lake shore and enjoy a day hike to explore the area, witness traditional local life, and trek to scenic Rupa Lake too, all with a stunning Himalayan backdrop. A stimulating Nepal adventure for anyone wishing to explore Nepal in a more interesting, varied, and rewarding manner.

    Arrive Kathmandu

Arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you'll be met and receive a private transfer for the short distance into central Kathmandu and to the "KGH" Hotel in the heart of the Thamel district. You'll be given a briefing on your forthcoming adventure, and in the evening, you can take dinner at your leisure in one of the many choices of cafes and restaurants in Kathmandu, although the open air courtyard cafe of the KGH Hotel is as good as anywhere.

    Accommodation: KGH Hotel - Kathmandu

    DAY
    2

    Medieval Bhaktapur

A culturally relaxed day to begin with. In the morning, a short, private transfer of around 40 minutes whisks you away from the hustle and bustle (and pollution) of frenetic Kathmandu to the ancient city of Bhaktapur. This mediaeval Newari marvel is, to many, what they hoped Kathmandu would be. Certainly, inside the old part of Bhaktapur, the absence of vehicles is a welcome relief. You'll be given an on-foot morning guided tour of the main sights of Bhaktapur, but also the hidden back streets of Bhaktapur that the coach-tripper tourists rarely bother to explore. Like anywhere, you need to scratch beneath the surface to discover the real Bhaktapur. By late afternoon or early evening, the reason why you're staying in Bhaktapur will become evident. The day trippers have left and returned to Kathmandu, and now you can enjoy the atmosphere of Bhaktapur as the locals do.

Accommodation: Hotel Heritage Malla - Bhaktapur
    Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    3

Cycle to Namobuddha & Dhulikel from Panauti

In the morning. First, a private vehicle will take you to the Hindu farming village of Panauti. After exploring Panauti with its ornate temples and shrines, you'll then cycle (with a cycling guide and back-up vehicle support) to the Buddhist site of Namobuddha. The distance from Panauti is just over 10 km, and there is a steady climb up from Panauti on a moderately graded road. Here you can explore and then cycle downhill, ultimately reaching the main road, which you follow to the Newari town of Dhulikel, which provides panoramic, extensive skyline views of the Himalayas. The total cycling distance today is around 25km.

Accommodation: Dhulikel Lodge Resort - Dhulikel
    Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

    To rural Nuwakot

A travelling day. It takes around 5 hours from Dhulikel to reach Nuwakot, but once you're past Kathmandu, what a journey it is as you travel in a private vehicle on a tarmac road that climbs to the top of a 2000-metre pass, from where there are outstanding views of the Langtang and Ganesh Himals. The road then drops down to the Trisuli River Valley, and then a single-track road leads up and up through pine forests and to the Himalayan foothill village of Nuwakot. Your accommodation is perched high above the Trisuli River and affords great views of the valley below, as well as facing the sun in the afternoons. Relax and enjoy life in the gardens of this beautiful former Newari Manor House.

    Nuwakot delights

The pace of life in Nuwakot requires some adjustment. Things are done here slowly and without hurry. But, as we're sure you'll agree, this is a rather special place too. So, after breakfast, a member of staff from the Famous Farm will be your guide and take you on a short walk (2–3 hours) to a view point above Nuwakot, from where you then walk down to the bazaar and then back to the hotel. Enjoy a leisurely lunch, and now that you have your bearings, enjoy a free afternoon and take a wander around the fields and tiny homesteads in the surrounding area. The locals are very friendly and are always happy to see the handful of tourists who venture here.

    Trisuli Rafting

A private vehicle transfers you down into the Trisuli River Valley and part way down the Pokhara highway to where you now take to the waters of the Trisuli River for some very pleasant rafting on the river. Wetsuits and rafting helmets are provided. Paddling downstream with the occasional bit of whitewater (nothing too scary though) is a great way to explore the river valley, which can only be experienced on the river itself. Keep a lookout for colourful birds and the odd bit of local life. Tonight you stay at a cosy, permanent tented riverside camp. It's very peaceful and relaxing.

    8

    Ramkot Hike

There's no real mass tourism here, and on today's walk, you'll not see anything like the numbers of tourists trekking in the Annapurna region. Hopefully you've woken to a dramatic sunrise across Manaslu and other Himalayan giants and, after a hearty breakfast, are ready to give the legs a bit of a stretch. You're heading up to the village of Ramkot. A staff member from the Old Inn will be your guide. One of the very few places where the traditional 'round house' style of village homes still remains is Nepal. It's a moderate trek of around 5–6 hours return and takes you to a part of Nepal only a handful of visitors see. There are, of course, some great views to enjoy too.

    Begnas Lake

It's around a 4-hour private transfer to the beautiful and tranquil Begnas Lake. There are great views of the Annapurnas and Fishtail, and this very relaxed location affords a much more serene and peaceful experience than the hustle and bustle of Pokhara in comparison. Chill out and have a dip in the hotel pool. Options include taking a boat out onto the lake or trying out the Ayurveda Spa.
